LIVE Interview with Donovan Kingjay 29th Dec – the Godfather
On Sunday 29th of December another Live Interview, we welcome Donovan Kingjay – for the very first time on Skyline Radio. A very talented and coveted artist from the Capital City.
Profile
Donovan Kingjay – born in South East London to Jamaican parents. Although not from a particularly musical family, Donovans’ talent became obvious quickly. At the age of 19, he made his first public appearance at a local community show and hasn’t looked back since. The early sound system that Sing Jay (His original name) performed on, was owned by Fred Locks and Frankie One Love of King Original Sound.
It was Fred Locks who renamed Donovan. Fred Locks notoriously said “How did you get the name Singjay and you are a straight singer?” To which the reply, “It’s a nickname from a long time – sing like a Jay Bird.” Fred said “From today de I, you get the crowning of Kingjay from now”. This happened in 2005, so Donovans early recordings were under the name of ‘Sing Jay’.
Donovan came to the attention of Sugar Minott who often affectionately called him his ‘Godson’. Sugar Minott became a huge influence on Donovans’ career and was thought of as a big brother. It was on Sugar’s label that Donovan released his first Jamaican single – “Never too late”, on Sugar’s Youthman Promotion Label in 2000.

His next album on the Black Legacy label is due for release at the end of 2019. One of Donovans’ greatest passions is travelling so he is constantly on the road performing, especially in Europe. Donovan recently headlined (in March 2019) at The Grounds in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, to a sell out crowd.
Donovan is gradually climbing the ladder of success and is going to be around for a very long time.
